Amos 5:23–24 (ESV): Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
主ご自身が定められた祭りやささげ物でさえ、堕落した心（神よりも他のものを愛する心など）で執り行われた場合、主に忌み嫌われるのです。公義…正義: 主がご自分の民に望む性質で、旧約聖書の中でよく用いられます。いつも水の流れる川のように、流れさせよ:中東では、雨季の時期、大雨が降ると水が激流となって荒地に流れて行きますが、それ以外の時期には干上がってしまいます。主はご自身のような正義、すなわち頼ることができ、力強い正義を私たちに望まれるということです。
